What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?
SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization.
This is the process of creating a website so that it is discovered,
interpreted, and indexed by major search engines in the most effective manner.
This provides the benefit of making your web site and its content relevant and
visible to search engines and web searchers alike.
Why is this important?
Just consider for a moment, what it would be like if no one could easily find
your business, your postal address, or even your business's telephone
number. Most business enterprises would not operate for very long in such a
situation. Exactly the same thing can happen with your web site if people can't
easily locate it on the Internet. Website visitation, if it existed at all,
slows to a trickle. Potentially valuable new customers will never even know you
exist.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
Optimisation (SEO) is the practice of modifying a web site so that it can be
correctly read and indexed by search engines. The major search engines, such as
Google or Yahoo! rely on computer programs known as "spiders" or "robots" to
continually follow links through Cyberspace and hopefully scan your website. A
search engine optimiser's job is to understand how to present these spiders with
information in the format they are looking for to rank your website highly.
Search engine optimisation success is strongly dependent upon effective keyword
research to establish precisely the keyword phrases your potential customers are
typing into search engines. Only intelligent keyword choices, correctly written
HTML source code and keyword-rich relevant content presented clearly to both the
user and search engine alike will achieve effective, long term results.
Search Engines' ever-changing rules
Every few months we witness major changes to search engine ranking algorithms,
and quality of results for the user. The term 'algorithm' refers to a VERY
complex mathematical formula used by search engines to determine the position
your website ranks for various keyword searches. Typically these formulae have
over 100 variables and would cover the wall of an average size room in your
house... so best not to think too much about the math's!
Naturally the search engine companies don't tell us how to beat your competitors (we only wish they would ;-) however, most professional search engine consulting firms run many experiments in an effort to determine what works best for our clients. This is an ongoing educational process, a good reason to outsource your company's search engine marketing. That is, of course, unless you want to start devoting a major part of your business time to keeping up with search engine technology.
